Twenty-five years ago, two men with a vision and a strong work ethic began working in the flooring industry. Jose Soares and Antonio
Fontana first met on a job site back in the early 1970's. The two
recently immigrated to Canada and had plenty to talk about. Soares'
family was from Portugal, but moved to France before arriving in
Canada in 1967, and Fontana immigrated from Italy in 1965. At the
time, the two were working as laborers for a local company. "We both decided that working for someone else was not for us," says Soares. They decided to pursue their dream and open their own business. They grabbed a station wagon, put their name on the side and soon were selling on the weekends and doing installations through the week. One job led to another and the two soon became business partners. "We went through some hard times getting the business off the ground," says Fontana. "There wasn't much credit available but eventually people gained confidence in our work and opened doors which made it easier for us to grow." They decided to open a showroom in 1971 and one year later, Plaza Ontario Marble and Tile Inc. was incorporated.
